Week 2, Post 2, Self Deception and Outward Deception

People tend to believe that they are better than they really are, not in a narcissistic way, but in a sense that they give themselves a little more credit than is due. In areas where they are praised or are looked at positively they tend to focus on that, while disregarding criticisms more often than not. In a sense they are lying to themselves when they do this, which can be useful in social situations.

If we can lie to ourselves, and we believe the lie ourselves, when we tell that lie to someone else we do not think we are technically lying. This allows us to bypass the cues we usually emit when we knowingly lie. When we convince ourselves that we are better than we really are, and subsequently convince others that we truly are that great, we get treated like we truly are what we believed.
