Week 6, Post 2
Social media has become one of the largest outlets for information, both true and false, in the recent past. Deception in social media is a very large problem that is very hard to combat. Studies have shown that false, or deceitful information, spreads faster than true information on Twitter. Due to the ease of access, people can create articles and other pieces of information that seem realistic more easily than ever. People also can impersonate others or pretend to be someone who does not exist in an online setting.
Social media can also cause a person to deceive themselves. The persona that they exude online and allow the internet to see can easily exclude the negative aspects of their life. When people put this fake persona on the internet, if they themselves believe this lie then they are deceiving themselves which can be harmful.
Why is it so hard to check for deception on social media?
