Week 8, Post 2
Advertising is a large part of our society today. It is everywhere and we are influenced by it more than we know. About 75% of our brain processes are subconscious. Modern advertising tactics utilize colors, camera tricks, and mental triggers that affect us subconsciously. The color red specifically will generally cause us to gain an appetite, which is why many fast-food companies have logos with a lot of red in the design. Camera tricks in food ads, such as using motor oil instead of syrup on a pancake, are used to make the food appear more appetizing in the shot. Ads for fraudulent business opportunities will claim that they are risk-free, easy, have ideal working conditions, and/or promise a decent sum of money is to be made. These all utilize subconscious functions of our mind to trick us into craving food, or into thinking that we should spend money without truly thinking about the repercussions.
Advertising and its blatant deception is everywhere. Ads use our subconscious to deceive us into paying money for something that we might not actually need, or something that is not worth the money. People tend to act on fear or urgency if presented in an ad, even if it does not directly apply to them. The deceptive influence that ads subconsciously provoke are utilized by every business, from the greatest to the smallest.
Has this new learning made you examine the ads you see more closely? Why do you think companies use deception in their advertising?
